These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Barcelona, along with a brief description:
♦ Works of Antoni Gaudi
Antoni Gaudi was a renowned architect who studied in Barcelona, and left behind many cultural legacies during the Art Nouveau movement. Park Guell is one of the most popular attractions that showcase Gaudi’s works. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Park Guell is a public park featuring gardens and architectural art decorated with Gaudi’s mosaics. His own residence is also located here. Casa Batllo is an apartment building designed by Gaudi, and boasts a very unique facade. Casa Mila is the last private home designed by Gaudi in 1912. Both residences are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, all of which are designated under the “Works of Gaudi.” These are just a few examples of Gudi’s works throughout Barcelona – look for tours that will take around to several of his buildings to ensure that you can see it all.
♦ Gothic Quarter
Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is essentially the city’s “old town,” featuring medieval/neo-gothic architecture and even a few remains of the wall that once surrounded the neighborhood. There are many historic landmarks in this area, including the Barcelona Cathedral (or Cathedral of Santa Eulalia), the Church of Santa Maria del Pi, Placa del Rei, Portal de I’Angel, the Basilica of La Merce, and remains of a Roman Temple. There is also an old Jewish synagogue and a few bars and small restaurants (including Barcelona’s oldest restaurant). You can easily access the Gothic Quarter by Barcelona’s metro system, and opt for a tour to ensure that you can see all of its highlights.
♦ Beaches
Since Barcelona is situated right on the coast of the Balearic Sea, it only makes sense that it features some beautiful beaches! There are plenty of beaches to go to around Barcelona. Some of the city’s most popular beaches include Platja de la Nova Icaria (great for beach volleyball), La Barceloneta Beach (fabulous for swimming), Playa de San Sebastian (featuring a boardwalk), and La Estrella Herida (featuring an interesting sculpture of 4 stacked cubes).
