Munich (Deggendorf)

Munich is a popular city in Germany, the capital of Bavaria, and best known for its roots to Oktoberfest. Famous for its many breweries, historic old-town, and Neo-Gothic architecture, you might feel as if you’ve stepped right into a storybook when spending time in this city. Some cruises that feature Munich on their itinerary actually dock in Deggendorf, which is about a 1.5-hour (145 km) drive from Munich. Deggendorf is located on the banks of the Danube River in between Regensburg and Passau (opening up the opportunity for day trips to either of these cities). Both cities are filled with historic landmarks, striking architecture, museums, and more. Deggendorf is certain to be favorable among outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy activities such as hiking and skiing. Munich is the true highlight of these cruises, as it is a much bigger city with more to offer. Regardless of which port your ship docks in, you might consider spending some additional time in Germany to ensure you can enjoy the full experience of Munich. Some cruises don't port in Munich, but rather offer a land portion where you would stay in a hotel for a night or two in Munich and then transfer over to the ship.

Many cruises include Munich in their itinerary, but AmaWaterways and Viking River Cruises are two outstanding cruise lines that feature cruises leaving from Munich. AmaWaterways offers a bunch of Europe itineraries on a number of their beautiful river ships (all featuring their own fleet of complimentary bicycles). Avalon Waterways is the only cruise line that currently features cruises departing from Deggendorf. A large number of their Suite Ships (including a few of their newest vessels) offer Eastern and Western Europe itineraries that begin in this excellent port city. Cruises range in length from 5- to 17-nights, with some itineraries featuring a pre-cruise land extension in Munich. A great time to visit Munich for good weather and fewer crowds is between March and May. Many travelers also like to go during the fall to celebrate Oktoberfest, and although the weather still isn’t too bitter at this point, you might consider bringing some extra layers to stay warm. You might also consider traveling during the winter, when you can experience Germany’s amazing Christmas Markets!

River Cruise Lines

Becoming more and more popular, a river cruise is an immerse and destination-focused vacation experience, on a small and luxurious vessel.

River cruises sail through the inland waterways of some of the world's most interesting vacation destinations (i.e. Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America), and provide their guests with a greater opportunity to spend time visiting more unique ports of call than a traditional cruise typically would.

Because the destination is the star of a river cruise, (typically guided) shore excursions are included at no additional charge by many River cruise lines. There are usually many interesting lectures given during the cruise, by experts on the history and culture of the region being visited.

Among the famous rivers that one may take a river cruise on are the Rhine, Mississippi, Seine, Danube, Mekong, Nile, Yangtze, Amazon and Douro.

Deluxe Cruise Lines

These cruise lines fit (quality and, usually, price-wise) somewhere in between Premium and Luxury cruise lines.

A country club casual atmosphere can be expected on these lines, as can be elegant accommodations and gourmet cuisine. These cruise lines are a great option for adults looking for a upscale, yet laid back, vacation.

Unique itineraries are often available on these cruise lines, as their small-to-mid-sized ships can visit ports of call that large ones can't get to.

The pricing on Azamara Club Cruises includes select beverages and pre-paid gratuities, while the pricing of Viking Ocean Cruises includes shore excursions and select beverages.

Specialty Cruise Lines

These cruise lines offer a truly unique vacation experience, with a wide range of possible amenities and itineraries. Some are expedition cruise lines, others have sailing yachts or are coastal ships.

On these types of cruise lines, there's usually a focus on a specific destination or theme. Itineraries are usually very destination intensive, aided by the fact that they're able to reach many ports of call that larger ships can't.

Expedition cruise lines are a great fit for adventure-seeking travelers, featuring exciting destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and the Norwegian coast. During the cruise, there will usually be plenty of interesting lectures given by experts on the destination being visited. Often, shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise. In fact, some of these cruise lines have all-inclusive pricing. There's a definite focus on the ship's surrounding scenery, as well as opportunities to view wildlife in their natural habitat. Small, but comfortable, ships are commonplace here, with anywhere from basic to very luxurious public spaces, cuisine, and accommodations (depending on the cruise line and ship).

Sailing Yachts, sail-assisted motor ships, offer a really unique vacation experience. Accommodations and cuisine on these intimate vessels can be anywhere from good to fantastic, depending on the cruise line. Destinations offered by these cruise lines may include the Caribbean, Europe, Panama Canal, Tahiti, and Costa Rica.

Luxury Cruise Lines

When the finest cruise vacation is your top priority, this is the place to start.

On a luxury cruise line, guests experience highly personalized service, a more intimate (and usually formal) onboard experience, gourmet cuisine, well-appointed accommodations, and fantastic amenities. Many of these brands have smaller ships, allowing them to reach ports of call that the larger ships can't, which results in unique itineraries.

All of these brands feature a version of all-inclusive pricing, and some of them have ships with all-suite accommodations. Although these cruise lines are usually more expensive than the rest, they also provide their guests with so much more, resulting in a fantastic value when considering all that's included.

Things to do near Munich (Deggendorf)

These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Munich, along with a brief description:

♦ Marienplatz

Located right in the heart of Munich, this striking city square is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in the city. Constructed during 1158, you will discover a ton of historical roots in and around this square, such as Gothic-style landmark buildings and a beautiful Marian column. Marienplatz was also the former site of local markets and tournaments. During Christmas time, it continues to host Munich’s famous Christmas Markets. Around the square, you will discover a bunch of nice shops and restaurants. No matter which corner you turn, you are destined to discover something incredible!

♦ English Garden

This large public park is unlike anything you’ve probably seen before. Not only is it a beautiful open space with lots of trees, but it also features many walking/jogging paths, a Greek temple, Japanese tea house, Chinese tower, a few restaurants, bodies of water, and a beer garden! During the winter, it is also the host of more Christmas markets. With Munich being such a large city, escaping to the tranquility of this giant park is a nice change of pace. You might even consider renting a bicycle and cycling your way through during a nice spring or summer day.

♦ Nymphenburg Palace

If you’re looking to visit one of Europe’s very first (and largest) royal palaces, then you definitely don’t want to miss your chance to visit Nymphenburg Palace. This Baroque-style palace was originally used as the summer home for past Bavarian rulers (any royal family members were born and died there). While the palace continues to be a royal residence, parts of it are open to the public for tours. Some of the things you can admire inside of this palace are its many styles of interior architecture, tapestries, family portraits, and more. The grounds also contain over 450 acres of gardens for you to enjoy on a nice day.
