♦ Museums

Cayenne has a few excellent museums that are definitely worth a stop when spending time in the city! One of the most highly-rated museums is Musee Alexandre-Franconie, which features a number of exhibits on French Guinea history, archaeology, and relics. It is also located in a Creole-style house, which is a wonderful attraction in itself! Another noteworthy museum is Musee des Cultures Guyanaises (also located in an old Creole house), which is a must-visit for anyone who ins interested in learning more about the country’s past and present ethnic groups. You might also consider stopping by Maison-Musee Felix Eboue (a tribute to Governor Felix Eboue).

Nothing else says “vacation” than a wonderful day at the beach! When spending time in Cayenne, you can visit a few of their nicest beaches! Many of them are just a short (10 to 15 minute) drive from the city center, so you can easily hop in a cab and be there in no time. A great beach for spotting giant turtles is Plages de Monjoly, which also features long stretches of golden sand and beautiful flora. Not too far off, Playa Kite is another popular public beach that’s perfect for kite-surfing. A couple of other noteworthy beaches are Plage de Montravel and, a bit further out, Plage de Gosselin.

If you’re looking for a good place to begin exploring Cayenne, Place Des Palmistes is a great choice! Being the main city square, Place Des Palmistes is filled with pure beauty, as it is lined with many palm trees. You will find a few monuments dedicated to the city’s history (such as the Column of the Republic and the statue of Felix Eboue). There are also many hotels and restaurants located near this landmark, making it easy to find food and lodging. It’s a great place to enjoy a coffee, snack, and simply take in the wonderful atmosphere of Cayenne!
