Punta Arenas is a unique South American city that’s worth exploring! Not only is it the southernmost city in the world, but it also once played an important role in South American trade routes before becoming an appealing cruise port destination! Punta Arenas is famous for its penguin colonies and national parks. You will also discover a few interesting museums, monuments, and tourist attractions (such as casinos and ski resorts). Best of all, the downtown area of Punta Arenas is easily walkable and only a short distance from the cruise port. Throughout the city, you can find tons of local Chilean restaurants, as well as those serving up a variety of international cuisine. With so many beautiful landscapes and awesome attractions to discover during your time in port, you might consider spending some additional time there before or after your cruise if you're taking a cruise from Punta Arenas.

These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Punta Arenas, along with a brief description:
♦ Plaza Armas Punta Arenas
Plaza Armas Punta Arenas is the city’s main square, and an excellent starting point for exploring the city. The main attraction of this square is the many monuments of historic figures such as Magellan. Depending on when you visit, you may come across some craft vendors. It is also located in close proximity to many shops, hotels, restaurants, and public transportation. As many locals hang out in this area, it’s a great spot for people watching!
♦ Magdalena Island
There are several reasons why Magdalena is a must-visit stop during your time in Punta Arenas. Its scenic beauty makes it an excellent stop on the End of the World Route (due to the cities’ southernmost location). It is also a breeding ground for Magellanic penguins, as well as a few other bird species. If you want to explore this island, you can catch a ferry and take a one-hour tour (as that is the maximum time allowed to visitors on the island). During your visit, you can walk around on the designated trails and view wildlife in their natural habitat, as well as check out the old lighthouse. Aside from park rangers and the wildlife, Magdalena Island remains uninhabited.
♦ Museo Nao Victoria
While there are a few great museums in Punta Arenas, one of the most appealing is Museo Nao Victoria. This interactive museum showcases full-sized replicas of the ships sailed by Magellan (Nao Victoria, Schooner Ancud, and HMS Beagle). There are also exhibits that show replicas of the weaponry, navigational tools, books and documents related to these ships. This experience is wonderful for children and adults alike, who are interested in learning more about shipbuilding, navigation, and discovery.
