♦ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

A great way to spend time outdoors when visiting Port Louis is to pay a visit to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. Built in 1767 by French Governor Mahe de Labourdonnais, these gardens now contain over 90 acres of flora and fauna. Guided tours are available so you can learn all about the different plant life and species contained within the gardens. Among the things you can see here are over 80 types of palm trees, water lilies, birds, turtles, spices and herbs.

♦ Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site

This UNESCO World Heritage Site once operated as an immigration depot for the 19th century British government. Today, it is now a museum where you can learn about indentured labor that occurred in Mauritius after the abolishment of slavery. Many of the exhibitions are interactive, making it a good activity for families or large groups. You’ll be able to see photographs of immigrants who passed through, learn about their living and working conditions, and much more!

♦ Jummah Mosque

This Mosque dates all the way back to 1850 and remains a symbol of Indian, Creole, and Islamic architecture on the exterior. The architecture inside is just as breathtaking (to be able to enter, you must be dressed properly). Just a short walk from the waterfront, visiting this Mosque is a great way to take in local culture.

♦ Blue Penny Museum

One of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of art and history in Mauritius is to visit the Blue Penny Museum. This is where you can come to view artifacts such as Blue and Red Penny Stamps, navigation maps, statues, coins and historic photographs. There are also exhibits that tell the story of the island’s colonial history, postal service history, and that of the novel Paul & Virginie, believed to be set in Port Louis. There is also a gift shop where you can pick up a few souvenirs to remember your visit by! Plus, this museum is located in close proximity to the Caudan Waterfront, which is filled with the city’s best shops, casinos, theaters, and restaurants!

♦ Central Market

A great way to immerse yourself in local Port Louis culture is to pay a visit to the Central Market! There are many vendor stalls at this market, selling items such as clothing, produce, spices, handicrafts, local beverages, and more! Plus, you can practice your haggling skills, as most vendors are open to negotiating on prices. Central Market is a very colorful experience that will embody all five senses, a must-visit when spending time in Port Luis!
