♦ Teohari Antonescu County Museum

When spending time in Giurgiu, you might consider checking out the Teohari Antonescu County Museum. This museum is filled with exhibits on the archeology, history, and ethnography of Giurgiu. If you are interested in learning about the town’s role in the Great War and World War I. Permanent galleries include artifact displays from the metal age, migration era, and reconstruction sites. For example, you can view ceramics, ornaments and religious objects when you visit this museum.

♦ Saint Ioan Rusul Monastery

Another site worth visiting in Giurgiu is the Saint Ioan Rusul Monastery, a relatively newer shrine (built in 2008). History buffs will appreciate that it is Romania’s first monastic settlement that was built to honor a military saint who refused to convert religions after being captured by the Turks during the war of 1711. Surrounded by lush forests, this monastery is located on the remains of a former military unit of the Border Police.

♦ Mocanu Island

Mocanu Island is a protected reserve off the coast of Giurgiu and is home to many birds, lizards, and native vegetation, including herbs. You can access this island via the Friendship Bridge, which stretches over the Danube River. Mocanu Island is a great beach for fishing and boating (plus you can catch some really stunning sunsets). It is also a wonderful spot for laying out in the sun!
