These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Ushuaia, along with a brief description:
♦ Trail to the End of the World
Since Ushuaia is located at the tip of Argentina’s southernmost peninsula, many refer to it as “the End of the World.” Appropriately, there is a sign located at the end of the trail signifying that you have reached the world’s end. You can hike the Trail to the End of the World or, for a more interesting experience, take a 100-year-old train once used to transport convicts. Along the way, you will see glacier lakes, plenty of mountains and forestry, and a bunch of different bird species.
♦ Tierra del Fuego National Park
Tierra del Fuego National Park is a great place to get some hiking in before or after your cruise from Ushuaia. Where else can you hike to an overlook that splits two countries (Argentina and Chile)? Much of this parkland is a nature reserve but it is still open to visitors. If you are looking for an extra challenging hike, consider taking the Cerro Guanaco trail (although there are a few other easier trails that are suitable for beginners).
♦ Ushuaia Prison Museum
History lovers will jump at the chance to check out this fascinating museum! The Ushuaia Prison Museum is a former prison that housed over 300 convicts before transforming into an informative piece of history. Group tours as well as self-guided audio tours are available, where you can see the cells for yourself and take in the somber history of old-world prison life. There is also a maritime museum located within the prison, where you can learn about the history of Antarctica and Yamana natives.
