Cruises from Churchill, Manitoba

To experience the ultimate arctic adventure, one of the best ports to begin your cruise in is Churchill. Located just north of the Hudson Bay, Churchill is famous for its arctic wildlife, including polar bears, arctic foxes, and Beluga whales. You also have a chance of catching a glimpse of the famous northern lights illuminate Manitoba’s night sky. Unlike many other port cities that feature museums, shopping districts, landmarks and other tourist attractions, the true highlight of Churchill is nature-focused. Bird-watching, dog-sledding, whale-watching, hiking, kayaking, and tundra adventures are among some of the most popular things to do and see. You also can’t miss the opportunity to try the local cuisine – where else can you try elk meatloaf or Arctic char?

A great time to visit Churchill depends on your travel goals. For a good chance at spotting wild polar bears in packs, your best bet is to visit between October and November. If you’re traveling during the summer, you can enjoy 24-hour daylight, blooming flowers, as well as the ability to see the bears hunting in action!

♦ Cape Merry

History lovers will love kicking off their vacation with a visit to Cape Merry. Situated between the Hudson Bay and Churchill River, this area is filled with natural beauty, as well as the remains of the city’s first battery, an original cannon, and a commemorative cairn. Guided tours are available to inform you more about the Fort Churchill fur trade post, geology, flora, and historic rock carvings. You can also opt to visit yourself and simply admire the scenic views you can take in from the city’s most northern point!

♦ Aurora Domes

If you’re interested in witnessing the stunning Northern Lights phenomenon from Churchill, you can do so in the comfort of the Aurora Domes. Located in a remote area free of artificial lights, you can enjoy the best views of the lights from giant, heated plexiglass domes. This is a great evening activity, as the domes open up in the late evening (between 8 and 9PM) and go on until the wee hours of the morning (between 2 and 3AM). It is also perfect for families traveling with young children or grandparents, who might not be able to withstand the bitterness of the arctic weather but dream of witnessing the Northern Lights.

♦ Eskimo Museum

The Eskimo Museum is a wonderful activity for travelers of all kinds! Also known as the Itsanitaq Museum, you can view a collection of fabulous artifacts and relics from the Pre-Dorset era to the Inuit era. Among the exhibits, you can view Inuit carvings, stone sculptures, wildlife specimens, hand-carved art, photographs, and much more! There is also a small gift shop where you can purchase handmade souvenirs to remember your visit by. The museum is open Monday through Saturday 9AM to 5PM (hours subject to change).
