Belgrade

Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, is featured on many river cruise itineraries (usually not as the starting port). Though Belgrade doesn’t have as many “must-see” attractions like some European cities, it is nonetheless an incredible place to take in the local atmosphere. Plus, many other desirable destinations (such as Budapest) are in close proximity to Belgrade, meaning that you can easily plan day trips before or after your cruise. Many tourists know Belgrade as a big party and clubbing city, but it is filled with many other delights to enjoy by day! For example, you will discover remarkable architecture, historic landmarks (such as fortresses), quaint outdoor cafes, interesting neighborhoods, and more! If you are looking for an authentic cultural experience, you are certain to find what you’re looking for in Belgrade.

A great time to visit Belgrade is between March and May, or September and October, as the winters can be quite cold.

River Cruise Lines

Becoming more and more popular, a river cruise is an immerse and destination-focused vacation experience, on a small and luxurious vessel.

River cruises sail through the inland waterways of some of the world's most interesting vacation destinations (i.e. Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America), and provide their guests with a greater opportunity to spend time visiting more unique ports of call than a traditional cruise typically would.

Because the destination is the star of a river cruise, (typically guided) shore excursions are included at no additional charge by many River cruise lines. There are usually many interesting lectures given during the cruise, by experts on the history and culture of the region being visited.

Among the famous rivers that one may take a river cruise on are the Rhine, Mississippi, Seine, Danube, Mekong, Nile, Yangtze, Amazon and Douro.

Things to do near Belgrade

These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Belgrade, along with a brief description:

♦ Belgrade Fortress

One of the most popular highlights of Belgrade is none other than the Belgrade Fortress. This historically significant structure was involved in over 100 battles, and was destroyed more than 40 times over the years. Overlooking the Danube and Sava Rivers, you will discover more than you can imagine when visiting the Belgrade Fortress. For example, the fortress is located right near a large park and zoo, plus a few military displays, so you can easily make a visit into a day trip. Plus, the views are spectacular – even more if you can catch the sunset from this point!

♦ Museum of Yugoslavia

If you’re interested in learning more about Yugoslavian history, then a visit to the Museum of Yugoslavia is a must during your time in Belgrade. One of the best highlights of this museum is that it is laid out chronologically, so you can easily make your way through the exhibits without missing anything. You can view all different kinds of memorabilia that once belonged to Josef Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. The museum also houses his tomb, an art gallery, and a small gift shop/cafe. You can easily spend at least an hour, if not more, exploring this fascinating museum. Since it is located a bit further out from the city center, it is advisable to plan on taking a bus here.

♦ Skadarlija

No trip to Belgrade is complete without stopping at Skadarlija (often called Bohemian Belgrade), a vintage street that will instantly transport you back in time to old-world Serbia. From cobblestone streets to local Serbian food to Soviet-era architecture and beyond, you will be surrounded by local culture. You will discover numerous hotels, restaurants, art exhibits, antique shops, and unlimited Serbian street entertainment!
