♦ Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
Phuket is home to 36 pristine beaches, making it a dream destination for snorkelers and scuba divers. Thanks to its warm climate and clear waters, you’ll have a great chance at seeing the many different kinds of marine life that dwell off the coast. Among the best beaches in Phuket for snorkeling include Ao Sane Beach, Paradise Beach, and Laem Ka Beach. Scuba divers will love Kata Beach, Karon Not Beach, and Kamala Beach. If you’re planning on spending a few days before or after your cruise in Phuket, consider checking out the dive sites near the Phi Phi Islands.
♦ Shrines and Temples
Phuket is famous for its many shrines and temples, which you won’t find in typical cruising destinations such as Europe or the Caribbean. Among the most popular temples and shrines you can discover in the city include the Shrine of the Serene Light (dating back to 1891), Jui Tui Shrine (one of the oldest and most popular shrines dedicated to the Chinese gods), Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham (a large Buddhist temple), and the shrine at Monkey Hill (a nice hiking hill with an observation platform and home to local monkeys. The shrine is located at the bottom of the hill).
♦ Markets
There are many markets that you can browse while spending time in Phuket! Best of all, you can combine many of your market visits with other attractions, making it easy to see as much of the city as you can. For example, a weekly market is held every Sunday on Thalang Road, which is part of Phuket’s “Old Town” section. The Phuket Indy Market is located on Dibuk Road, and features live performances, customized souvenirs, and Thai street food vendors. Another popular shopping destination is Chillva Market, where you can also catch live performances (though they are presented in Thai). Since this market caters more towards locals than tourists, it’s a great opportunity to really get a feel for local life.
