Palau, Micronesia

Palau (formerly known as the Republic of Palau) is an archipelago in Micronesia, in the Pacific Ocean. About two-thirds of the population of Palau lives on the island of Koror.

With approximately 340 islands, Palau offers many opportunities to tourists who can scuba dive and snorkel, adorning the islands' rich marine environment, swim with hundreds of innocuous jellyfish, and explore the beautiful coral reefs and lagoons. While most international cruise ships don't call at Palau ports very often, National Geographic Expeditions and Silversea Cruises take their guests here annually.

Anyone looking for a unique and undisturbed vacation should visit Palau, famous for its beautiful island scenery, clean dive sites offering unforgettable adventures, and world-famous attractions such as Jellyfish Lake, Rock Islands, and other UNESCO heritage sites.

The best time to travel to this archipelago is from October to May, with the average annual temperature around 82 °F and the driest months being February through April. It tends to rain more frequently from June to October, although there is still a lot of sunshine during the wet season.

Specialty Cruise Lines

These cruise lines offer a truly unique vacation experience, with a wide range of possible amenities and itineraries. Some are expedition cruise lines, others have sailing yachts or are coastal ships.

On these types of cruise lines, there's usually a focus on a specific destination or theme. Itineraries are usually very destination intensive, aided by the fact that they're able to reach many ports of call that larger ships can't.

Expedition cruise lines are a great fit for adventure-seeking travelers, featuring exciting destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and the Norwegian coast. During the cruise, there will usually be plenty of interesting lectures given by experts on the destination being visited. Often, shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise. In fact, some of these cruise lines have all-inclusive pricing. There's a definite focus on the ship's surrounding scenery, as well as opportunities to view wildlife in their natural habitat. Small, but comfortable, ships are commonplace here, with anywhere from basic to very luxurious public spaces, cuisine, and accommodations (depending on the cruise line and ship).

Sailing Yachts, sail-assisted motor ships, offer a really unique vacation experience. Accommodations and cuisine on these intimate vessels can be anywhere from good to fantastic, depending on the cruise line. Destinations offered by these cruise lines may include the Caribbean, Europe, Panama Canal, Tahiti, and Costa Rica.

Things to do near Palau, Micronesia

These are some of the most famous tourist attractions in Palau, along with a short description:

♦ Rock Islands

Located between Koror and Peleliu and known as Chelbacheb, the Rock Islands estimate from 250 to 300 islands (Eil Malk, Ulong, Ngeruktabel, Bablomekang, to name a few) with coral and limestone uprises in Palau's Southern Lagoon. These islands are renowned for their beautiful blue lagoons, fantastic beaches, Dolphin Bay, diving locations, and decorated caves. Many of them have unique mushroom- and umbrella-like shapes. The Rock Islands have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.

♦ Jellyfish Lake

It is exciting to hike to the heart of Eil Malk Island, located about a 45-minute boat ride from Koror, to discover one of the most amazing lakes, Jellyfish Lake, with millions of golden jellyfish swimming at the surface. These jellyfish have lost their ability to sting, so snorkeling in this lake, which is approximately 12,000 years old, is an incredible experience for tourists.

♦ Palau's Reefs & WWII Wrecks

Palau has about 203 square miles of reefs spread through the ocean. Nearly half of them are well-developed barrier reefs near the western side of Babeldaob, the archipelago's largest island. Its eastern side has extensive fringing reefs. But the most famous fringing reef is near Peleliu, south of Babeldaob. The Peleliu Wall and Cut is a thrilling dive destination for tourists who like to observe fascinating marine animals and beautiful coral life. Palau islands are also a famous underwater museum of intriguing World War II wrecks and relics, attracting divers worldwide.

♦ More Amazing Places to Visit

Ngardmau Waterfall is a gorgeous attraction on the Badeldoab, the tallest waterfall in Palau, falling from the tallest peak, 712-foot-high Mt Ngerchelchuus. Dolphins Pacific, located on the northern side of Ngeruktabel Island, attracts tourists with undersea wonders and friendly dolphins you can swim with. To better understand Palauan culture, tourists can visit several tentative UNESCO sites in Palau and museums. The Ngebedech Terraces in the southwestern part of Babeldaob island are grassland savannahs. The Imeong Conservation Area attracts tourists with a traditional Palauan village and sacred rock shelter. The village of Ollei in Ngarchelong State has the stone coffin of Tet el Bad with carved ornaments. The Etpison Museum in Koror has two floors with Palauan and Micronesian artifacts, exhibitions, and images. Here you can also find some souvenirs. The Belau National Museum in Koror can take guests through the whole history of the islands.
