Leaving your Riad, you step directly into the busy streets of the historic medina to begin your walking tour. Your guide will lead you through narrow alleys filled with the aroma of spices and hanging brass lanterns. This walk is about experiencing the real atmosphere of Marrakech, moving between high-energy marketplaces and quiet green spaces. In the afternoon you will attend a cooking demonstration and learn how to make tanjia, a different form of tagine.In the evening, explore the culinary side of the medina on a food tour, sampling market stalls before enjoying a traditional mechoui BBQ lamb experience at a local restaurant.

Not to be confused with the popular tagine, "tanjia" is distinct to Marrakech and one of the best local experiences for any traveller. Learn the history and culture behind this dish, then head to the market to pick up a clay vessel called tanjia - which the dish is named after - and the ingredients you will need, traditionally some meat and spices. Drop off your tanjia at the neighbourhood "furan" or communal oven to have it cooked in the ashes that heat the nearby hammam. The next day, pick up your tanjia and enjoy a delicious meal with the group.
Food Tasting in the Medina

6Akrich: Women's Cooperative
Leaving the flat, bustling urban center of Marrakech, the road heads south toward the rural foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. As you travel to the village, the landscape opens up significantly. The road is bordered by expansive fields and mature olive groves. As the elevation gently rises, the dense city noise drops away completely, replaced by open country horizons and the dramatic, sweeping backdrop of the rugged Atlas peaks. Akrich is a quiet, traditional Moroccan village (douar) where the rhythm of life is entirely tied to agriculture. The town itself is characterised by low-slung, earth-toned and terracotta-colored homes that blend naturally into the sun-baked soil. Everything here revolves around agriculture. Here you will explore a local community project that protects regional heritage during an authentic and interactive experience.

Then experience a brief carpet weaving demonstration using wool and yarn dyed with local and organic plant-based ingredients. What are the mandatory travel insurance requirements for this trip?
Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When travelling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your leader, who will take note of your insurance details. When selecting a travel insurance policy we require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency evacuation and repatriation. A minimum coverage of USD200,000 is required. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. Some tours include adventure activities that require extra coverage (e.g. crampon use); please review your itinerary and make sure that you are covered for all included activities. What are the meals like on this trip?
Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. For all trips please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.Breakfasts Moroccan breakfasts tend to be different from your usual cereal and toast morning fare – most will be very simple - a croissant or sweet roll with jam and instant coffee and some hotels will have buffets where you will have more variety. While you are experiencing what a Moroccan family would eat, some travellers do find the provided breakfasts a bit “bread heavy” and enjoy buying fruit the day before to supplement their breakfast.Lunches and DinnersMoroccan cuisine is world famous and your CEO will be taking the chance to show you the best of it. Staples include cous cous, a type of grain topped with stew, tagine which is actually the name of the pot this tasty dish is cooked in, and brochette, bbq skewers of meat. These meals will generally cost between 10-15 USD per meal depending on the type of restaurant and which part of the country you are in. Other tastes not to be missed include pastilla, a sweet pasty with a savoury filling which is traditionally pigeon and harira, a delicious soup based on chick peas and filling enough when teamed with fresh bread to be a whole lunch. If you are heading to the coast the fresh seafood cooked at one of the local markets is a must eat!SnacksMorocco's fresh orange juice is highly recommended and you should not leave without trying a glass. The brave can try the tiny snails which are perhaps the local's favourite snack but you might prefer a cone of piping hot bite-size fried cake donuts.

What is the role of the group leader during this trip?
This G Adventures group trip is accompanied by one of our group leaders, otherwise known as a Chief Experience Officer (CEO). As the group coordinator and manager, the aim of the CEO is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. You can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of Morocco, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. They will also offer suggestions for things to do and to see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. We also use certified local city guides where we think more specific knowledge will add to the enjoyment of the places we are visiting - we think it's the best of both worlds.

What are the tipping guidelines for this trip?
On the Geluxe Collection tours, tipping is included for all included activities and meals. Tipping is not included for the CEO or Porterage. Should you want some basic guidelines on tipping for the activities you do on your own, please see below. At the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $10-15 USD per person, per day can be used.For meals and activities not included in your itinerary, it is appropriate in Morocco to tip 10%. Though not compulsory, tipping is expected. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels and shows an expression of satisfaction.
