These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Larnaca, along with a brief description:
♦ Church of Saint Lazarus
History buffs certainly don’t want to miss the chance to visit the Church of Saint Lazarus. Not only is this 9th century church one of the most breathtaking churches in Cyprus, it’s also an excellent opportunity to dig deeper into the past. There is even a small cemetery located behind the church which contains the resting spots of residents from the Ottoman era. The interior of this church contains gold accents and is nothing short of beautiful. The tomb of Lazarus is also located inside of the church’s crypt.
♦ Hala Sultan Tekke
Another popular cultural attraction is none other than the Hala Sultan Tekke. This Muslin shrine is located near Larnaca’s Salt Lake (worth a visit on its own), and pays homage to Umm Haram, the wife of a companion to the prophet Muhammed. During your visit, you will discover a mosque, mausoleum, and cemetery. Plus, the ground contains some beautiful gardens, and art enthusiasts will love admiring the architecture. Proper attire is required, as this is a religious site. If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of a flamingo from the Salt Lake!
♦ Kastella Beach
You simply cannot visit Larnaca without spending some time at one of its beautiful beaches! One of the most highly-rated beaches is Kastella Beach, a popular family beach with clean, shallow waters. Plus, the waters at this beach tend to be very warm, making swimming and other activities more enjoyable. There are also a few restaurants located nearby, so you don’t have to wander far when it comes time to eat. What could be better than a day at the beach with the salt water filling your nose and the warm soft sand between your toes?
