These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Catania, along with a brief description:
♦ Piazza del Duomo
If you’re interested in admiring the city’s grand collection of Baroque architecture, Piazza del Duomo is a great place to start. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are many iconic landmarks located within close proximity of this main square. Its most prominent building is the Cathedral of Saint Agatha (see below). It is also home to the famous Fontana dell’ Elegante, a fountain featuring a black lava elephant statue that dates back to Roman times! You can also discover another fountain, Fontana dell’Amenano, Catania’s fish market, and town hall. If you’ve purchased a coffee from one of the local cafes, Piazza del Duomo is a wonderful place to enjoy it!
♦ Cathedral of Saint Agatha
Located in Piazza del Duomo, the Cathedral of Saint Agatha is one of the most beautiful buildings you can find in downtown Catania. This cathedral is dedicated to the martyr Saint Agatha whose body currently rests inside. Made from lava and limestone, the structure has been damaged and rebuilt over the years due to a series of earthquakes. Inside, you can discover a collection of artworks, treasures that once belonged to St. Agatha, the dungeon, and the tombs of numerous figures, including Vincenzo Bellini, who helped design the cathedral. If you happen to be visiting Catania during the first week of February, you can also take part in the festival that honors her life!
♦ Castello Ursino
When spending time in Catania before or after your cruise, you’ll have the chance to explore Castello Ursino! This 13th century castle was originally built as a royal castle for Emperor Frederick II, it then once served the Sicilian Parliament before opening to the public as a museum. When visiting Castello Ursino, you can view a number of art and artifacts from the castle’s heyday, as well as learn about the many influences that have bestowed upon Sicily throughout the years. This museum is open daily from Monday to Sunday (subject to change).
