♦ Cu Chi Tunnels
Originally used as hiding spots and supply routes by Viet Cong soldiers, these underground tunnels will instantly bring you back in time to the Vietnam War. Today, the Vietnamese government has preserved 75 miles of this tunnel system for tourists who are interested in learning more. Local tour guides will provide you with historical insights and knowledge as you walk through the tunnels and learn what it was like for soldiers to live and fight. You can even enjoy a meal reminiscent of what the soldiers ate back in the day. As this attraction is a bit further out from the city center, you should allot at least half a day to a full day to enjoy this experience, as it is very worth it!
♦ Independence Palace
Independence Palace is one of the most popular attractions in Ho Chi Minh City. This landmark was the original home of South Vietnam’s president during the Vietnam War and was also the site of an army tank crash, which signified the war’s end. Touring this palace is an incredible way to learn more about Vietnam’s political climate and history. Outside of the palace, you can admire the building’s striking architecture and explore its surrounding gardens.
♦ War Remnants Museum
For an even deeper insight into Vietnam’s vast history, considering paying a visit to the War Remnants Museum. You can learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Vietnam War and First Indochina War at this incredible attraction. Among some of the exhibits you can view include a UH-1 Helicopter, an F-5A fighter jet, a Patton tank and a couple of attack bombers, as well as a guillotine and cages where political prisoners were once held. There is also a collection of photography that tells the stories of chemical warfare.
