These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Stavanger, along with a brief description:
♦ Old Stavanger
Old Stavanger, known locally as Gamle Stavanger, is a cozy and historic city center featuring over 170 wooden buildings, mostly white cottages built in the 18th century. There are also many other architectural styles on display in this easily walkable town. Plus, there’s also an array of boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants, where you can taste regional favorites such as lutefisk (dried fish).
♦ Museums
Stavanger is brimming with several engaging and unconventional museums well worth visiting. The canning industry played a pivotal role in Stavanger’s industrial growth, which is commemorated at the Norwegian Canning Museum. There’s also the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Built to resemble an oil platform, this contemporary center features interactive exhibits depicting the lineage of Europe’s oil and gas capital.
♦ Pulpit Rock
Pulpit Rock, also referred to as Preikestolen, hovers 1,980 feet (604 meters) above the Lysefjord. Hike to the top (guided tours are available for less experienced hikers) to gaze over the ocean from the plateau. The hike stretches roughly five miles and takes three-four hours, but the famous trail is well-marked and fairly accessible. Staring down Norway's fabled fjords from the apex is a moment you won't soon forget.
